邦画づくし。

先週末まで春らしく暖かい陽気だったのに、週があけてみれば雨。
氷雨のような寒さですよ、あなた。せっかくワンピースとかスカートとか出して浮かれてたのに。
このがっかり具合が伝染したらしくて、月曜日はかなりの人数が欠勤してました。
これだけ温度差があればみんな体調も悪くなりますよね。
ちくしょうあたしの春を返せ！

さて、相変わらずのんびりまったりな毎日ですが、
映画とか料理とかを、もそもそエンジョイしております。
先週は映画祭が近所であり、上映されていた「大日本人」を観たと言う相棒に影響されて
DVDを借りてきました。色々評価がアレな映画らしいですが・・・。
最初っから最後まで実写の怪獣バトルだけにしておけばよかったのにと思いました。
板尾さん最高。ごっつが懐かしいなあ。

友人が岡本喜八監督の「大菩薩峠（東宝版）」を持っていたので借りて観てみました。すごい！
こんなにかっこいいチャンバラものは久しぶり。白黒の昔の映画ですが
役者の侍姿が堂に入っていて迫力満点でした。それとキャスティングがいいんですよ。
昔の役者さんはあまり知らないのですが、みんな特徴ある顔で見ていて楽しいです。
キャラがたってるっていうか。バラエティに富んでいていい。
ついでに小林正樹監督の「切腹」も見てみたのが昨日の夜。
「大菩薩峠」のような大立ち回りは少ないものの、絶妙な台詞まわしとタイミングで
「羅生門」を思わせる緊張感があります。心からいい映画だな、と思いました。

I’ve been watching Japanese films lately. IFF Boston was the past week, and I heard Big Man Japan was screened at there. I haven’t watched the film by my favorite comedian Hitoshi Matsumoto, so I wanted to go but I couldn’t make it. Later that week I rented DVD and finally was able to see it. It was fun…though it gets really slow and awkward in many places. It’s almost like, you have to wait for 20 to 30 min for watching really good funny kaiju fight. My favorite scene is the smelly monsters’ invasion in the city, though it gets a little too dirty…(the male monster’s … uh…) I also liked the kaiju battle with the superheroes toward the end. Why didn’t he do this from the beginning??

We watched The Sword of Doom the other day. I think this is an amazing samurai film. It is an old film, but it still has very strong images and good sword fighting scenes. I like how the actors have various different facial structures in this film. They all have strong character and appearance, and also all of them look spontaneous in samurai kimono. The other movie we watched this week is Harakiri, also a samurai movie. This one is more like Rashomon, more focused on human drama than sword action. I really love this film, because it is very successful in creating emotional tension in a scene without having physical action. I enjoyed the samurai language used in lines, they are all choreographed in a beautiful manner.

怖いもの

最近急に春らしくなってきました。
仕事に明け暮れていて、知らないうちに桜を見過ごしたりしないように
なるべく外を歩き回るようにしたいと思います。
うん。で、話題と画像のギャップが凄いですけど、
これは会社の知人のバンドの新アルバムのカバーを頼まれたもの。
迫力あってかっこいいサウンドなので、それ系好きな方は是非。

おかあさんへ：　こういう絵も描いたりするけれど、わたしは元気です。 心配しないでください。

骸骨とか炎とか、描くのは平気なくせに本物を前にするとダメなのです。
小さい頃、博物館へ連れて行ってもらったとき、頭蓋骨が展示してあるのを見て
物凄い勢いで入場口まで逆走ダッシュして親を困らせたことも今はいい思い出・・・。
（でもあれってよく考えたら気持ち悪いですよね。
展示してある本物の人骨って、もともと誰かの死体だったんですよ？）
人間の頭蓋骨はダメなんだよなあ。魚のも動物のも平気なのに・・・。
あとね、火が怖いです。マッチは凶器だと思います。
揚げ物も怖くて一人ではできません・・・。

Boston this week is finally feeling like spring. We are enjoying the weather having nice outside lunch at work. I want to see cherry blossoms bloom around my neighborhood when it gets more warm, but I’m afraid I would be too busy to remind my self about that…

By the way, I did CD cover art for Jeff at work, for his band Breaking Wheel. I like their sound. Cool guitar. If you are interested, here is their site on MySpace. It’s kind of funny that I am totally fine drawing skulls and fire…(in fact those are my favorite subjects to draw) while I have phobia about human skulls (or dead bodies) and fire.

When I was little, my parents took me to museum in Tokyo on an weekend. It was really nice of them, and I enjoyed watching dinosaurs and birds at the exhibition. After I saw the dinosaurs I entered the other room, and there was a TONS of human skulls placed in order of evolution stage. I was around 3 or 4, and I jumped up and ran as fast as I could to the entrance. I actually got outside the building, and mom, who chased after me, had to explain the situation to the ticket person to re-enter the exhibition to meet back with other family members. (By the way…I think it’s pretty disturbing to see actual human skeletons in an exhibition. Real means it’s someone’s corpse…isn’t it?!)
I don’t know why I am so afraid of human skulls. I am ok with fish or animal skulls…And I am afraid of fire, too. I get nervous every time I cook with gas stove top. I am so nervous that I wouldn’t cook deep frying dish when I am alone. Also, to me, matches are weapon.

風邪

風邪をひきました。久しぶりに本気で微熱。頭痛がしてだるいです。
三日たった今は大分楽になりましたが、足の付け根のリンパ腺が腫れちゃって痛い。
家でごろごろしながら、古本を読んでいます。北原亞以子の慶次郎シリーズ。
時代小説も色々と読み漁ってきたけど、この作者は上手いと思います。
侍ものっていったら池波正太郎しか！て思ってたけど、
女性の視点で見る江戸も興味深い。主人公は男だけど。
PorterExchangeのコトブキヤさんは、古本が一冊５０セントなので嬉しい。安い。
毎週末、ぽちぽち買いに行くのが最近の楽しみなのです。
在庫が少ないので、そのうち買い尽くしちゃうかも・・・。

I’ve been down for couple of days due to the cold I caught. This one attacks me with headache and fever. Now it’s been three days, and the fever is a bit better. However my lymph node on my thigh joint is swollen…it hurts a bit…I think it will heal soon once I get over this cold. (and I am definitely not going to doctor for this　：ｐ) I am spending this weekend staying home and doing nothing expect reading books. I buy used paperbacks at Kotobukiya in Porter Exchange Mall. I like how all the books are 50 cents each…very reasonable. My only concern though, is that I will probably end up buying all of their stocks in few months. Their collection is really small.

ロンリー・ピープル

I watched Yellow Submarine finally. I like the part where Eleanor Rigby plays. Watching surreal film like this makes me want to create animation, but I always do nothing other than writing down some ideas…

On Saturday we watched Running out of Time, an Andy Lau movie. I think Andy in disguise in the movie resembles Satoshi Kon a lot. Also watched Woman in the Dunes on Monday. I like the imagery in the film a lot. Very inspiring film, indeed…I would like to watch the two other films (Pitfall and The Face of Another) the director, Hiroshi Teshigahara did. Maybe I would buy the DVD box. His film reminds me of Cubric.

I have been cooking every weekend. I tried tofu hamburg with mushroom sauce last weekend. That was a successful dinner. The other time I made baked tilapia with cilantro sauce…that was good too. Noah and I tried making sushi together which was also a great dinner. I am thinking making a collection of those recipe I tried so far. (so that I don’t have to go back online to search them again)

今週やったこととかだらだらと。
初めて「イエロー・サブマリン」を観る。
エリナー・リグビーが流れる辺りの場面が一番良いと思う。
こういうシュールな映画を観ると何か映像を作りたくなってきてしまうのだけど
結局アイデアをメモっとくだけで何もしないのが最近のパターン。コレじゃダメだ・・・

アンディ・ラウの「暗戦」を観る。
変装したアンディはどことなく今敏監督に似ている・・・ような気がする。

「砂の女」を観る。勅使河原宏監督の他の作品も観てみたくなった。
なんとなくキューブリックっぽい。いや、キューブリックが影響されたんだろうか？

ジョジョ友のアドルフがSBRの最新刊を貸してくれた。えへへ。

週末ごとに料理することにしている。
最近挑戦したのは豆腐のハンバーグのきのこソース、
白身魚のオリエンタルソース焼き、巻き寿司など。
そのうちまとめてレシピをファイルしておこうと思う。

あ、あとかがり姉さんの絵仕上げときました。
ていうか色塗るの放棄。てへ。

今日スタバへ行ったらカップの名前のところにRykuって書かれていました。ラ　イ　ク！！
うん、お姉さんはこの大胆さと創造性をずっと大切にして欲しいと思うんだ。
遠い目でそんなことを（心の中で）つぶやいた２５の春。

もう３月なのに寒いですね。少なくともボストンは寒いですよ。
こちらのレッドソックスがそちらにお邪魔しているみたいで。
ゲームの余興（？）のクリップをちらっとテレビで見かけて思ったんだけど、
剣道とか和太鼓とか、そこまでしなくても、もう十分アメリカ人、日本わかってるよ。
サムライとかスシとかゲイシャとか。
ちゃんと忍者だってノンフィクションだってわかってる。（特にこことか。）

同僚から伊藤潤二の「うずまき」（英訳版）を借りて読んでいます。
英語版の「富江」はすごい読みにくい印象だったけど
こっちはさくさく読める感じ。なんでだろう？
ホラー漫画だけど（それほど）グロくないので鳥っこも安心です。
読んでるうちにうずまき模様が、すごく不吉で怖いもののように思えてくる不思議な漫画です。

I like how people at Starbucks are creative about inventing new spelling for my name. This morning they came up with Ryku. Very cute. But the most astonishing one so far is the legendary “Raqmo”, which is not even close to my real name Reiko. I liked the spelling so much that my friends and boss started calling me raqmo or raq.

So it’s March already, and Boston is still freezing. Speaking about Boston, our beloved Red Sox is playing in Japan, I heard. I saw a video clip of Japanese half time show which features a bunch of Kendo people doing sword dance thing and some Japanese Wadaiko drummers performing. It’s cool, I guess, but I feel like there is no need for advertising traditional stuff to Americans any more. People in the U.S. already know a lot about traditional Japanese culture. Especially this guy. We all know Samurai and Ninja are for real.

Paul at work let me borrow his Uzumaki comics. I’ve read Tomie done by the same artist Junji Ito. I had a hard time concentrating reading Tomie, but Uzumaki is so much better. I can’t really name the reason, but somehow Uzumaki fits better in English. The comic is weird-cool, it makes me grow fear towards spiral patterns in everyday life.
